I went to Bhakpatur which is one of the three main cities in the Kathmandu Valley. It has a very medieval feel and much of its glorious architecture dates from the end of the 17th century. There are lot of woodcarved temples there and I found out that Kathmandu actually means something like Wooden House. There is one large temple there that has been built entirely out of one tree - very impressive. Another temple was burned down during a fire. The once german prime minister Helmut Kohl visited the site and authorized funds to restore the temple to it's former glory.
