Our New House In India

Welcome to Monsoon's first travel blog from India. We have settled in well after our first week in Kolkata, India. We were greeted by our Guru Shantanu Bhattacharyya and his family after an exciting yet precarious taxi ride from the airport. You can watch a clip here (insert video clip link). They were waiting at 'our new house' near Ruby Circle in Southeast Kolkata. Because they could not accommodate us at their home, they found us a ground floor we could rent in a house nearby. We have spent most of the last week at Shantanu's house, studying and preparing for our upcoming concerts in Agartala and in the surrounding Kolkata area. We have about two weeks to prepare for these concerts which will feature Shantanu, his wife Druba, daughter Mitra, top desciples Hindol and Yeman, the three of us as well as the children in Agartala, and many of India's top musicians on accompanying instruments. We are very excited and grateful for these concerts that Shantanu has set up for us, and many times he has told us that we will be some of the first western musicians to perform Indian classical music on western instruments. How lucky are we! We have taken a few trips into the city; to get supplies, clothes, a phone, and look into an upright bass for Justin. It is an amazing city that seems to go on forever and travelling around is quite the adventure. We eat all of our meals with the Bhattacharyya's and have spent most of our time at their house. We are trying to get used to a few Indian customs, like eating with your fingers, using a bucket to shower and of course the Indian commode. The food we have received is amazing and there are many vegatables and fruits that we have never had before. Fish is a must for Bengalis and I (Andrew) have enjoyed many great fish curries.  We have many many hours of practice ahead for this unbelievable music that we will be performing so we will leave you there and be back to update you in a week or so. We hope all of you are doing well in these first few weeks of 2009. Fir Milange (Hindi for until we see you next).
Andrew, Jonathan, & Justin.
