I spent 8 day in BKK, initially with some American friends, one whom had brought his Vietnamese wife. It was fun, standard Bangkok debauchery, not quite as outrageous as I used to do it, but great fun for sure and something I'd like to repeat soon. The last few days were spent waiting to get word about my visa status from the Myanmar embassy.
While in Bangkok, I got mixed messages about whether my visa would be valid for a return trip within the 4 week time period it was good for. Since no foreign aid workers or journalists were being issued visas, I planned to return to Myanmar to gather information and volunteer for whatever kind of medical work I could assist with. It was interesting talking and planning with international news organizations like cnn and bbc how to get news our of Myanmar. I was very flattered (appropriately or not) that they ultimately ended up using undercover reporters using the method I suggested, which was anonymous reporting by satellite phone that couldn't be traced. Both BBC and CNN reporters were caught and deported while I was waiting in Bangkok.
While waiting for my visa or to at least get my passport back from the Myanmar embassy I spent a the last few days shopping, but those last few days were pretty tame- no go-go bars, no clubs, nothing health jeopardizing. Lame for Bangkok ;P
