Carnage in Cali

I have finally managed to drag myself away from the gorgeous Caribbean coast and am now in Cali, the salsa capital of Colombia. I was sad to leave Northern Colombia - I had been travelling with Helen and Chris for nearly 6 weeks and had been having a great time with them. So I thought that things might quieten down after leaving them to head up to Panama. How wrong I was......
The adventure started on the way to the airport in Santa Marta. Felipe, the hostel owner, had agreed to drive me to the airport in the morning. We were driving along a busy road when we nearly got sandwiched between a reversing truck and a taxi, and while I was still reeling from that 'near miss', right in front of us (in the road) a man ran out onto the street, shooting at someone/something with a huge black gun. He then shot a couple of times into the air, jumped onto the back of a motorbike that was being driven by someone wearing a balaclava and sped away! I wasnt sure what he had been shooting at (it was either into a house on the side of the road or the minibus in front of us) but we certainly didnt hang around to find out and drove off as quickly as we could. So that was interesting to say the least.
So I arrived in Cali in one piece and found myself a hostel. It was pretty empty so I decided to have a chilled day and read. I then met an English bloke and we decided to go out and get some dinner and have a few beers. While we were out we bumped into another English guy who had met a local bloke who had lived in the States for a few years and could speak perfect English.
To cut a long story short (and Im sure most of you can fill in the blanks) the local guy took us to a really cool bar, we got extremely drunk, left at 1.30 when it closed and found ourselves (it was only me and Tom at this point) in a car with another local guy and girl (friends of the other local bloke) who we had only just met, but they took us to a fantastic open air club out of town where we proceeded to get even more drunk, dance and meet about 20 or so completely mad Colombians! I also got chatted up by a gorgeous Lenny Kravitz lookalike (although he spoke no English and my Spanish isnt too hot so the conversation wasnt too good!). The club was absolutely amazing, the music excellent and everyone was up for having a crazy time.
At about 5am I decided that Id had enough so got a cab back, but Tom decided to hang out with the couple that drove us there. When he finally arrived home at around 5pm the next day (!) I was relieved to have left them as Tom had spent the rest of the evening in a love hotel (hired by the hour) with the couple watching porn and drinking rum! Oh, and the girl turned out to be a lesbian who had fancied me so Im pretty glad I didnt get roped into staying....
Its a funny old country Colombia is....
Oh yes, and at the hostel I am staying at there is a funny American/Japánese guy who is currently interviewing for a Colombian bride to take back to the States. We get to listen in to all the interviews as he meets these poor women in the living room of the hostel! Classic.
