As I´ve said before... I´m travelling with far too much stuff... I had to pay $25 in excess baggage to fly from San Francisco to Mxico City... must get rid of some stuff before I fly back to USA!

After an uneventful flight I arrived in Mexico City only to wait for over an hour for my hostel shuttle to pick me up... they kept saying it would be another 15 mins over and over...!

I spent my first day in Mexico City wandering around the Zocalo (town square) and surrounding area. The architecture surrounding the square was excellent including a very ornate church. On my way out of the square I happened upon a naked protest... about 100 Mexicans from a local village dancing in the street. From what I could understand it was because the government had taken their land. Not a sight you expect to see everyday!

I walked through the local markets to Templo Mayo, an Aztec ruin. It was really interesting to walk through and have a look at some of the architecture and decoration still present today. I also wandered along to Alameda Central - a beautiful park in the middle of the city with various fountains and scultures dotted around the place. Next to the park is Palacio de Bellas Artes which is a lovely building.

All of the walking left me absolutely shattered but I managed to drag myself out to a local restaurant for some Mexican food. I used my best spanish to ask if the dish I had ordered was spicy.. the answer was no... I actually took some of the skin of the roof of my mouth! Either the waitress was lying to me or I am that intolerant of spicy food (I have a suspician that it´s the latter!)

My next days explorations led me further afield to Chapultepec park and after getting of at the wrong stop once and having to pay the train fare again (Pesos 2 which works out to be about 10p!) I eventually arrive at the right place. I spent ages just wandering around the park and looking at the various market stalls that had been set up along the main path. It´s a lovely escape from the noise and pollution of the main ciy and I could have spent a lot more time here! I also went to the Museo Nacional de Anthropologia which has displays showing the order and craft of the various races who have lived in Mexico throughout the ages from Mayas to Atzecs and beyond... Very interesting and a good base for my future travels.

I met the group of people I would be travelling through Mexico with... 24 of us but travelling on a much bigger vehicle than previously... I will no longer have to pass my luggage up to the top of a minibus! W´hooo!!!!

Details of my travels throughout Mexico and pictures to follow....
