We arried early on a rainy morning to old Dali city. It is a magical place - even in the cool rain. We enjoyed early morning irish coffees and a delicious vegetarian meal, where you select the veggies out of a bucket on the street and they cook it up for you. Pumpkin flowers were our favorite.
visited monument for Kubla Khan. We had an afternoon nap and spent the evening exploring at night. Ate a delicious meal of lamb and traditional dali spring rolls (made with dark greens and pork and cheese) saw a 2 year old kid SMOKING!! WHAT... the parents were just laughing. tried to catch a photo but missed it. the buildings and gates all lit up at night were beautiful.
next day was not rainiing!!! and we spent it on bicycles. went to a traditional Bai people house before crossing lake to bike to another village. On our way there was an old man walking his cow to eat. It was spooked by us and started running down the street, dragging the old man in gumboots with him - HILARIOUS - a rogue cow! The old men everywhere are so cute - we say Ni Ho to all of them!! gorgeous views. crossed back by boat after lunch and biked 18kms back to the 3 pagodas in town. Monica had a lot of trouble figuring out which way her helmet went - putting it on backwards 3 times! ("what?did i do it again?") Biking was great. Had a BIG feast BBQ at the hostel and after another old town walk, slept!
p.s. Toilets here are interesting. really cant be embarassed to do your business. often just a trough or hole. often without dividers or just low dividers. the smell is great - we use tiger balm under our noses!
