Our Canada Day was spent on a 7 hour bus ride from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang. Leaving VV a little hung over and sore from our river swinging experience, we were well stocked with BBQ peanuts and Coffee flavoured Tim Tams... It was a long and mostly rainy drive with an average speed of about 30 Kms/Hr but it was SPECTACULAR mountain views. it was windy mountain roads the whole way but the greens, blues, browns and grays were gorgeous. we passed many mountain villages along the way.  we tried to take a lot of photos but they do not do it any justice.
Arrived to Luang Prabang in the evening and walked through the old quarter in the dark. the city is a world heritage site and we can see why - again the French influence mixed with lao and asian, and the buddhist wats are pretty beautiful. it has a magical feel
we ate Lao soup at a night market stall and had an early night in.
monica had a horrible sleep and woke up with a rash all over and a swollen face and ears! i think its from the water in the river....waiting it out to see what happens.
our second day was spent taking a traditional Lao cooking course adrienne in market
adrienne in market
. we first visited the market and learnt a lot about lao food. then we cooked up a HUGE feast!!! and tried mango wine and Lao Lao which is strong rice whisky. we met Adrienne from Victoria BC during our cooking course and spent the afternoon chatting with her.
we climbed up phousi hill in the centre of town (like a Lao Mount Royal) and watched the sunset (or what we could see through the clouds) from there. We spent the rest of the night at a tea (they forgot to bring our tea) and bookhouse watching movies.
had a yummy breakfast of fruitshakes and banana pancakes with tasty lao coffee before grabbing a last Lao baguette and heading for the airport to Chiang Mai....our travels are centered around food!!!!mmmmm
