I had a little change of pace last week. I unexpectedly was asked to attend a training in Fort Yukon. This is a another village in the Yukon Flats and it was really interesting to visit and compare. I flew out of Arctic Village Monday morning at 11:00 in yet another little bush plane. This time I got to sit in the front with the pilot for a birds eye view. Unfortunately, Im to short and could not see over the controls but still it was interesting. I stayed in a wonderful little bed and breakfast which is owned by a really interesting lady who married into the tribe forty years ago. She rents rooms out of her hand built rustic cabin and it is awesome. Im even more in love with wood burning stoves after this trip! Ft. Yukon has about 600 people as opposed to Arctic Village that has about 140. It actually has roads and stop signs and I rode in a vehicle for the first time in a month. It is flat but very pretty with lots of cabins and spruce trees. I was able to see the Mighty Yukon River up close and personal. It has started to freeze and the ice is buckling. It was a nice break where I got to chat and socialize with new people and sleep in a comfy bed (down duvet, flannel sheets) with no kids climbing in at odd hours.
The village still has village problems and the teachers and I spent a good deal of time comparing notes. I was supposed to leave out Thursday but got grounded and stayed for another day due to ice fog. It was way to foggy to fly and so I got one more day in the cabin chatting with the owner and other guest. I was actually very glad to fly into Arctic and I was just in time for the Carnival and Village Masquerade. Mary won 20.00 bucks for her costume. You have to dress up and dance around while the judges try to guess who you are. I told fortunes during the carnival and my class kept putting me in "jail" at the jail booth. It was fun. I may be able to load some video of the masquerade.
