While being at work on March 4th, I anxiously kept checking the Air Canada web site and not surprisingly quickly found out that my flight from Ottawa to Toronto was among so many other ones being cancelled on March 5th!   Advisories were posted on the website as to how to get in touch with the flight carriers for further instructions or assistance in a time like this!

No need to tell you.....the telephone was quickly picked up and once on the phone with an Air Canada employee and as I explained to her my situation that Michel was already in Toronto on a business trip and that he was expected to be flying back home in the evening, she quickly suggested that he stayed in Toronto and that instead, I joined him immediately!   That she could easily change our flights itineraries without incurring any additional charges; after all, these were unusual circumstances!

This approach really made sense to me because you know, had Michel flown back home to Ottawa this evening, well, this would have meant that we'd both be stranded here in the major snow storm which was fast approaching!   This way, the two of us would be in Toronto at the airport and from there, wait for the storm to pass through and be ready for our flight out to Cancun!   Yeahhhh!

With no time to waste, I was back home from work at 4:00pm and by 4:30pm, out the door with all my suitcases in the trunk of the car including Michel’s and heading to the Ottawa International Airport for my 6:30pm flight to Toronto.  Luckily for me, I had my dear father to drive me to the airport!

You'll be happy to know that yes, I made it on time to the airport.  Thanks Dad!   Just walking the short distance from the car to the terminal doors, it wasn't hard to see that the wind had picked up, that blowing snow flurries had started and that the temperature had gotten much colder!   Yurk!    But hey, looking on the brighter side of things an hour later, here I was sitting on the plane high above the sky and on my way to Toronto.   I had made it on time because once in Toronto, I found out that many of the departing flights after mine from Ottawa were delayed or cancelled altogether!

Michel was already waiting for me at the Toronto International Airport.   He had left his business meeting much earlier to come and pick me up and help me with all of the suitcases!  The airport’s terminal was quite busy and crowded due to many people flying in and out this specific evening in the hopes of beating the storm.

As we tried to book a hotel room somewhere within proximity of the airport, none were available!   They were all booked by people having made last minute changes to their itineraries.   All I can say is that it was simply by pure luck that after half an hour of calling many hotels from the airport’s public telephone booth, that one was finally found with only one room left!    Regardless of the price… need to ask, it was taken in a jiffy!

Within half an hour, we were picked up by the hotel’s shuttle and heading down the busy highways towards it.  The normal 15 minute ride actually took us a good 45 minutes according to the driver because you see, here in Toronto the storm was starting as well!   Blowing snow was covering the roads, forceful winds were creating blizzards and visibility was at its poorest!

But I couldn’t care less.....I had made it just on time in Toronto before the start of it and that’s all that mattered!
