Day 34 - noon
The plane descended rapidly in preparation for landing at the Ottawa International Airport! At that moment, while looking out my window's seat, the reality of my African journey now being over.....kind of hit me like a ton of brick!
From the sky, I could see patches of snow still on the ground, a reminder that we were still in the cold season even though we were now in early April. At least, I took great comfort into thinking that I’ve missed 34 days of much colder weather and snow storms.
Looking at myself in my small mirror, I tried to fix my hair as best as I could and put a little bit of makeup on. My skin was scorched from Africa’s powerful sun. I had something to show from my journey….more freckles!
After picking up our suitcases and breezing through customs, we were out those gates and searching for a familiar face. Eric was there standing next to people looking all cheerful and happy to see us safely back home!
Embraces were made and news given before we followed him to his car parked outside the terminal. Once out those doors, the cold air hit me like a dagger! It was freezing! I rapidly pulled my coat against me and with my head down, started walking.
Half an hour later, we were opening the front door of our home sweet home! Even though things were as I left them, it felt kind of strange walking through that door.
It felt as if time had stopped and that now, we were back as if we never left, we were back to our day to day routine, back to reality! “My Out of Africa Journey” was now finished but I had extremely fond memories of it and of all the things done and seen.
What I learned about my journey to Africa is that there are so many wonderful places to see and explore in this world. That life is short and that one has to make the best of it and enjoy it to the fullest!
I now have memories of my trip but at least, memories last forever! Plus, I have 25,000 pictures to remind me of it!
Until next time, happy and safe travels! The end! Monique :-)November 17, 2013
