Day 20 - before dawn
Day 13 - Northern Experience Tour
35 Celsius, pitch black
No sound could be heard inside the entire Okaukuejo Resort/camp. The whole place lay in dead silence where only a few lights shone here and there. Other than that, total darkness surrounded us; it appeared as if everyone was still sleeping except us! It was only 5:00am.
With torches in hand, Michel and I achieved in making our way to the waterhole without getting lost…..not that it was easy. It might have taken us several minutes more than the previous day at daylight and the place still appeared spooky at night but we made it there to that waterhole all in one piece! No lions were seen wandering inside the camp except for those blackbacked jackals! Good stuff!
The waterhole was deserted; no souls were around except for a person resting on a wooden bench. His camera stood on a tripod right next to him ready to capture on digital film that special shot. We must have startled him because upon seeing us, he rapidly jumped on his feet looking drowsy with messy hair and clothes.
He'd been waiting at the waterhole for the last two hours. Unfortunately, no African wildlife had come. Bugs could be seen flying all around the big spotlights still projecting beams of light to the waterhole. They were the only living creatures around except for us of course and a blue bird, the pale-winged starling Bergstar that came to rest close to me!
It was a big disappointment! I had hoped to see more African wildlife especially at this hour of the morning but none came. I guess just like us, the animals needed their rest and were probably all sleeping as well! :-(
After a good fifteen minutes of patiently waiting, we went back to our lodge having more trouble this time finding our way. With my sense of direction, can’t say it was working too well in this creepy pitch dark place!
We had our breakfast soon afterwards at the campground’s main central building and exactly at 6:30am, were back onboard Mhondoro with the rest of the group waiting at the gate for the camp’s security person to open quite wide the big front doors. It was time to leave, go on game drives and change camp in the process! Monique :-)
