Day 15 - afternoon
Day 8 - Northern Experience Tour
Cool breeze along Atlantic coast
Cloudy at times
It was almost two in the afternoon when we arrived at Walvis Bay, a city along the Atlantic coast with a population of 85,000 inhabitants.
I do have to say that the town greatly impressed me with its cozy atmosphere, cleanness and beautiful homes. Plus, with its large bay and amazing sand dunes, no wonder it was recognized as being the center of Namibia's tourism activities!
However, we weren’t here to have fun and explore more in depth the town but only to have lunch! Therefore, once the food was bought by Alex and NTando at the grocery store, we settled along the beach to eat.
The breeze of the ocean was very cool and windy even though it was a gorgeous sunny day. The temperature might have appealed to the other fellow travelers who were previously boiling in heat but since I found it too cold for my taste, I ate inside Mhondoro!
On the road once more, we now had 30 km in distance that separated us from Swakopmund which according to Alex was a charming little German coastal town where we’d be staying for the next two days; where we’d also have the opportunity to partake in a few of the many optional activities offered!
Hmmmm! That was interesting enough to hear and to have a few crazy ideas popped into my head as to what Michel and I could do but…….you’ll just have to wait and see to find out! Hehehe! Any guesses you guys back home!
The road leading to Swakopmund was paved which was quite a temporary luxury if you ask me and followed the Atlantic coastline. Miles and miles of sand surrounded us being blown in all directions by the ocean's strong winds. The dunes were of a yellow color as opposed to the reddish ones of the Namib-Naukluft National Park but were still incredible to look at!
It was almost 4:00pm when we arrived at our accommodations for the next two nights, a 100+ year old place with a French name of "Pension A la Mer"! Not being a five star but more of a 2-3 standard hotel, it still exceeded my expectations with its cleanliness and friendly staff.
Our room was located on the ground floor right at the end of the extension part of this two story hotel giving us a much quieter experience. Without being spacious, it was comfortable enough with the bare necessities and en-suite bathroom.
So yes, I liked it and felt at home away from home kind of feeling! Plus, it was reassuring to know that a security guard was on duty even after dark standing next to the hotel’s front gate!
As for the location, I couldn’t have asked for anything better! We were about two blocks away from the beach and a short walk to the downtown area! So you know what that meant! A lot of exploring to do!
Since we were meeting the group at 6:00pm for a short walk around several blocks followed by dinner at one of the town’s local restaurant, we took this time to freshen up and rest for a while before our evening’s little outing! Monique :-)
