Day 13 – late afternoon

Day 6 - Northern Experience Tour
           - Cloudy blue sky, 38 Celsius, hot

Daisy, the lodge's roaming springbok followed us as we walked to our room located at the end of one of several motel style structures.

You’re probably wondering how I reacted to this and you’re right…..I kept my distance from this animal being afraid of it but after soon realizing its tameness, I was fine afterwards.   As for Michel, he just couldn’t help but tease her!   Luckily for him, Daisy had very short rounded horns.   Ha, ha!

The room appeared comfortable being basic but clean and neat looking with en-suite facilities and most importantly no geckos around!   After quickly dumping our bags, Michel and I were out in a jiffy walking around!

We were a good 100 km from the nearest town but this Hammerstein lodge nestled in between mountains was a perfect place to stay with its magnificent landscape and vistas.   Imagine…..all my photo opportunities!

With one of the lodge’s guide, at 6:00pm we followed her to three very large enclosures where each one of them had hand-reared animals.    You’re probably wondering by now what kind of animals these were!!!   Amazing ones for that matter……caracals, leopards and cheetahs!    Yeahhhh!    I know, I know…..afraid of spiders and geckos but ok with these!

We were instructed by our guide to make a line and follow her one behind the other one as we entered the cheetahs’ huge enclosed gate.   Two of these big cats were wandering around and we soon made our way towards them.

Being accustomed to our guide and to people invading their environment on a daily basis, the cheetahs let her pet them while they licked her hands and face.  As for us, we stood nearby and watched in total amazement.   Great details were given to us of their lives here in captivity at the lodge having been handraised since infancy!

I can tell you one thing…..it was a great experience to be here and to be able to interact with these amazing cats but I just couldn’t help but think what a wonderful fur coat they would make!   Hehehe!   Would definitely go well with my lynx one!

While taking many pictures of the cheetahs, one suddenly and rapidly jumped off from the top of a platform and came roaming right next to me…..slightly brushing my leg……while I held my breath, made no sound or movements.    Wow!

What an amazing moment this was!   Since I didn’t move, no photos were taken!   I just wished that Michel did capture this special moment by taking pictures with his own camera.   Well, you’ll be happy to know that he did take one photo…..but my head was cut off!   Groannnn!    Better this than nothing!   Right!
