Day 12 - afternoon

From the distance I could clearly see the imposing medieval town of Assisi with its stone built houses, castles and towers.   As I stayed glued to my window seat admiring every aspect of it, Ciro drove this huge monster of a motor coach up a winding road that led us directly close to the top of the hill!

Since he couldn't stay parked for very long, we rapidly disembarked from the bus and immediately took an exterior escalator which brought us even higher up the hill followed by a short walking distance.   After all this puffing and huffing for some of us….and no it wasn’t me…..we were rewarded with a spectacular view of Assisi’s valley below!

For those of you who don’t know very much about the town of Assisi, it was the birthplace of St. Francis, the founder of the religious order in his own town in 1208.  He is remembered by many as a lover of nature!

By following Ernesta, a huge archway was passed under and within a matter of seconds, I was transported into another era inside this medieval town of Assisi!   Looking around, I was quite pleased with what I was seeing.   However, you should know that even though this medieval town was founded many, many centuries ago, due to a devastating earthquake in 1997, many structures were destroyed but had been rebuilt and restored giving the place a freshly look while keeping its ancient charm!    Interesting facts!   See, it pays to listen to the guide once in a while!   Ha, ha, ha!

A meeting place was setup and then, each and every one of us disappeared from view by going our own separate ways and taking various pathways in search of the town’s hidden treasures.  As for us, since we were starting to be hungry, we retracted our steps and sat along a short stone wall built along the hill.

To be continued…..
