Day 11 - early afternoon
Since the group's meeting point was right across from the Danieli Hotel, we waited patiently along the Grand Canal for the rest of the people to show up.
The temperature had gotten much warmer and the sun was out which made me smile quite a bit while thinking that it was a perfect day to be drifting along the canals. Yep, that's right! Well, you'll be happy to know that's exactly what we were waiting for! Our gondola ride. So, it couldn’t get any better than this!
By taking a big step, I was the first one to board the gondola for our one hour ride along Venice’s canals. I immediately sat in the back of this narrow boat where five other people including Michel followed me behind, six being the maximum! In my perspective, I had the best seat on the gondola!
The gondolier stood behind me facing the bow and rowed with a long wooden pole a forward stroke followed by a compensating backward stroke! He seemed quite comfortable in his own ways and when inquiring if he was going to sing to us a song along the route, he quickly said that he didn’t have any voice left to do so! That was quite a disappointment even though Michel offered to sing to us in his place in which we all quickly refused after hearing some notes! Ha, ha, ha!
Sitting comfortably on the gondola’s red leather seat with Michel’s arm around my shoulders, we passed underneath many beautiful bridges where various vistas were seen along the way; each having their own and unique charms. We even passed underneath the Bridge of Sighs which was quite a sight within reach! The atmosphere was pleasantly relaxing. So, how romantic can this be! The only thing missing was the gondolier's singing….and this, he didn’t want to do it!
The breeze continued to be comfortable and warm as we drifted slowly along the romantic canals while our gondolier skillfully steered the gondola! Various picturesque scenes kept appearing in front of me in which the sun’s rays brightened up the turquoise colored waters making it sparkle like diamonds. Looking up, I was surrounded by tall ancient buildings casting their shadows on the water’s surface. I was having my first ever gondola ride and enjoying every moment of it.
Thinking about it, a gondola ride wouldn’t be complete without a kiss being given under a bridge! Right! So, when the occasion came up, Michel and I sealed the kiss making it a special moment captured on photo. After all, wasn’t this one of those things that you’re supposed to do here in Venice! Kiss while passing under a bridge! For luck! Ha, ha, ha!Monique :-)
