Day 7 - evening
Familiar places that we had seen earlier during the day such as the Signoria Square where the statue of David originally stood and the Basilica with its bell tower were seen all over again as we walked right passed them in this medieval city of Florence. At least, this convinced me that we weren't lost, that we were on the right route heading back to our hotel!
We took our time not being rushed by anything while glancing around acting just like tourists! Mind that we weren’t alone! There were many others just like us doing exactly the same thing because after all, this was the tourist spot and weren’t we tourists after all! Ha, ha, ha! We did inquire occasionally to a few passersby the directions to our hotel by showing them our map but this was simply to make sure that we were on the right track!
I just loved Florence with its designer clothing boutiques and beautiful window displays giving a fashionable look to all of these ancient medieval buildings. There was something about this city that made you want to live here! That’s right! I really felt comfortable and at home here! Ok…...that settles it, we’re moving here! Ha, ha, ha
In the horizon, right in between one building’s arches, the sunset suddenly appeared. It was quite something but also, it made us realized that we needed to rush a bit if we wanted to arrive back at the hotel before darkness swept in. We had our map to look at and so far, we were fine. It appeared that we were on the right path as I relied heavily on the street names!
Gradually, the crowd dispersed, everyone going in different directions as we left the touristic part of Florence and entered deeper into the business section of the city. Still, we felt comfortable walking on several deserted streets at a comfortable pace. However I should say that occasionally it did become confusing at times because it wasn’t that obvious on which street we were on! The blocks were much longer and the street names weren’t always there!
So again, the famous inquiry to the occasional passerby as to where our hotel was located or where exactly we were on the map was again asked! Unfortunately, no one seemed to know the whereabouts of our hotel, this being because it was a new one! We regretted not having asked for its business card this morning, this surely would have helped don’t you think!
Still, we moved on and at one time even wondered if we shouldn’t hail a taxi. After all, many had passed right next to us but unfortunately had passengers in them! And no, I wasn’t panicking! We still had a little bit of daylight left as the sky gradually darkened by the minute.
Looking at the map, we were now in a specific piazza square; this one being really close to our hotel according to it. Yeahhh! It felt as if we had found a needle in a haystack! Really! However, this piazza was much bigger than it appeared on the small map. So, right here, we had trouble finding the right street to continue on! As they say, so close but so far away! Or something similar! Ha, ha, ha!
By inquiring to a nearby policeman who was directing the traffic, he wasn’t much help as he didn’t know the hotel’s exact location! That was kind of surprising because according to the map, we were supposed to be near it and if he didn’t know where it was, how do you think we felt! Were we lost! Dahhhhh!
So, we continued on feeling a little bit disappointed and lost in thoughts, and yes, my heartbeat was probably racing faster by now…...when just one block away from where we were when we inquired the famous question to the policeman, we found the street that we were looking for, we found the street where our hotel was located! Yeahhhh! Dumb policeman!
We were back in business now and could see our hotel all lighted up several meters away down the deserted street! And to think that @@.??? policeman just one block away didn’t even know where it was! So, you bet…. from here on, we took all our time in getting there! It was as if a heavy toll had been lifted away from us…..can’t speak for Michel but for me anyway! Ha, ha,ha!
We had found our hotel in which a half an hour walk ended up being almost two. Maybe our guide had misjudged the timing because it was exactly 7:00pm when we stepped foot inside the hotel’s doors. But of course, I never doubted my sense of orientation and we did take our time! Monique :-)
