Brazil Tour Day 2  – Rio de Janeiro

By 4:30pm, Michel and I were walking on Copacabana's famous boardwalk heading towards the "Arpoador Rock", the spot to be in order to see with our very own eyes the so much talked about settling of the sunset behind the mountains and over Ipanema Beach.  Excited, you bet I was!

Along the way several small cafes, all colorfully well decorated, sold snacks and drinks while in many areas musicians played their musical instruments.  The atmosphere was quite lively and vibrant plus everywhere we looked, tourists were in abundance.

Gigantic sand castles were also seen along the way as they dominated the view near the boardwalk.  We took our time walking at a slow pace since it was quite relaxing plus still very early.  On numerous occasions we stopped to admire the ocean’s view and yes, you guessed it, we stopped for me to take pictures.

After 45 minutes, we were at the Arpoador Rock.  Being still very early, like two hours before the sunset, few people were in the area so we took fully advantage of it by exploring the surroundings.  Being very thirsty from all of this walking around in the sun, several bottles of water were purchased and drank entirely within minutes.  It felt so goooood!

After finding a good spot, we sat down on the ground and waited.  Eventually many locals started to arrive, many more tourists and eventually, the place was packed.  We were all here for the same purpose, to witness the sunset and since everyone else was walking around with their big SLR cameras around their necks, I felt completely at ease doing the same.

From the top of the huge rocks, the vistas were absolutely breathtaking.  In the horizon way above the mountains, the sun was slowly but surely starting its descent and it was now only a matter of time for all of this suspense to take place.

Looking straight ahead of me, I was hypnotized by the powerful effect of the sun as it turned the sky on fire with its bright yellow rays that radiated all around it and in the process painting on the ocean’s floor a magnificent golden carpet that reflected all around the rocks and its surroundings.  The entire area was suddenly becoming alive with the magical force of Mother Nature making me understand why so many people came here every night just to witness this magnificent phenomenal.

The walk back to our hotel was a pleasant one in which darkness soon enveloped us and in the process giving us stunning views of Copacabana’s beach at night from sea level. Glancing all around me, the sidewalks were crowded with locals and tourists enjoying themselves, the restaurants were packed with people eating and the beach, with many activities going on such as volleyball and soccer.  People never slept here in Rio and I could understand why as I felt the warm refreshing breeze on my skin from the ocean!

Back at the hotel, we settled on the 14th floor rooftop terrace for a while eating an ice cream cone and enjoying the last few hours of this very long but exciting day!
