After we had a delicious lunch on the M.S. Medea, the rest of the afternoon was spent simply relaxing on the cruise ship. A few hours later, we decided to leave the ship and wander around the port where the ship was berthed in Luxor.
Several Tourist Policemen were guarding the entrance to the pier. Once we passed by them, we walked on a small narrowed unpaved road where several small souvenir shops, a pharmacy, an internet café and houses were part of the decor.
As we walked, we were haggled non stop by the locals enticing us to buy merchandises displayed outside or better yet, to enter their shops and look around. Politely we declined but gave in after several pleadings. Looking at the souvenirs, their prices were ridiculously high. Therefore, nothing was purchased but at least the locals were happy just to have had us enter their shops.
Down the street, a small convenience shop was selling hard candies in which two big bags were purchased and candies given to all the small local kids who by then had gathered all around us for their share of the bag. Older men and women even joined in wanting a piece of the treat as everyone around yelled with enthusiasm. With big wide smiles that sometimes showed missing teeth, they all chewed the candies as if they had just won the lottery!
Back on the M.S.Medea, Michel and I had a pleasant tea and biscuit treat which was held exactly at 4:00pm in the entertaining room on the main deck.
In the early evening from the top open deck and just before dinner, we watched the sunset across the Nile River. As feluccas sailed in the golden horizon, spectacular views were seen in which our appetite was enticed even more just thinking that this was just the beginning and that more was yet to come once we cruised down the river!
After dinner, we all gathered on the main deck's banquet room in which we were entertained with a belly dancer and a spinning derwish show. Both were quite entertaining however, the belly dancer wasn't that great. Michel even joined in making us all laugh in the process.
Thankful for being able to simply relax!
