Saturday was our day to explore Ocala and we chose to visit the Appleton Museum of Art.  A couple of years ago this institution hosted an exhibition of the dresses of Princess Diana and I remember hearing news coverage of this show.  The museum is housed in a beautiful building and has an excellent collection of old masters - Russian, Dutch, English, French and American - and galleries of artifacts of early North and South American societies.  We both thoroughly enjoyed these exhibitions and in the last gallery, which featured more contemporary work, we were pleased to see the works of several Canadians on display.
This museum was originally built to display and preserve the collection of Arthur I. Appleton, the son of the founder of the Appleton Electric Company in Chicago.  During his lifetime he travelled extensively and collected artifacts ranging from Tibetan sculptures to entire collections such as the Victor DuBois Collection of African Art.  Other collections feature Mediterranean antiquities, Asian, Pre-Columbian, European and American art and artifacts.  Since the museum was established, a number of other donors have contributed items and today the museum has over 8000 pieces dating from 3000 BC to the present.
