Don and I have visited Waterton Lakes National Park several times but we are usually there in late September, after the hustle and bustle have died down.  Because we are in southern Alberta earlier than usual this year, we decided to have lunch at the Prince of Wales hotel and to take the boat cruise to Goat Haunt Montana.

The hotel closes the second week of September and the weather can be iffy later in the year for the boat cruise, although they assured us that the boat 'International' is designed for smooth sailing in rough water! Wind gusts through the Waterton Gap can be quite strong.  We were told that this summer has been exceptionally calm and the water on the lake had just a small ripple on the surface today.

We missed the 1pm sailing because we were unable to find a parking spot so booked for the 4pm. Then headed for the Prince of Wales hotel for lunch in the Royal Stewart Dining Room.

Soon after crossing the lake we were treated to a good view of a 'black' bear feeding near the shoreline and I was able to get a couple of good shots.  That proved to be the only wildlife we saw but the scenery from the boat was spectacular.  Our commentator was excellent, knowledgeable about the geology, history, flora and fauna of the area.  He had a really low key, pleasant manner of presentation that we really enjoyed.

On the trip back I was able to get some good evening shots of Chief Mountain, one of my favorite landmarks in this part of the province.  As luck would have it, I also got some 'horse' shots that I will enjoy.  Hope you do too!
