As soon as I put my bags down I went straight out to explore, with my trusty compass. I walked for about 3 hours from the hostel to the marina and Esplanade, then back again. Singapore is clean, safe and heaving with bars, restaurants, coffee shops, hotels and shopping malls. It feels great to be on my own and to blend in with the crowd (unlike in Cambodia etc)
I didnt stop to buy, except for my fridge magnet, but walked the whole length until I reached the Botanical gardens where I had a picnic. ( I learnt today that there are a thousand varieties of Ginger and that bananas belong to the ginger family!! There was a whole Ginger village in the gardens and not one gift shop sold my favourite chocolate gingers!) On the way back i tried to find some traditional Singaporian food for dinner, but as there is a huge mostly Chinese, Malay and Indian population, the tradition is fusion cuisine. I was happy with that. (This morning I even brought a touch of classy English fusion cooking to the hostel by making egg and soldiers for a girl from Taiwan.)
Tonight I am going to sample the famous Singapore sling cocktail that was created by a barman in Raffles over a hundred years ago, (thanks Alexia and Cheers!) I take this task seriously and have tested a few of these in Vietnam in preparation.
Overnight flight to Auckland tomorrow!!! Have booked a hostel on recommendation from my parents, have since found out from someone who has stayed there, that it is next to a strip joint... makes a change from the normal temples I suppose!
