40 hours and three flights (with the wonderful Cathay Pacific) have brought us from one continent to another. We are in Bangkok and we love it! We came here a few years ago and found the city too hectic, too busy and too polluted. For some reason this time around we can't get enough. It might have something to do with the fact that everywhere you look, someone is cooking and selling the most delicious food imaginable!

For our first four nights here, we stayed at Sunflower Place, a great little hotel tucked down a little alley off Silom Road, a crazy mixing pot of Thai life, with glitzy shopping malls, temples, street food vendors, restaraunts and markets all jostling for space. On our first morning we wasted no time in getting our first Asian food fix. Street vendors cook up all sorts of delicious delights and we started with a tasty mix of deep fried sweetcorn cakes and some kind of bean cake all served in a bag with a healthy dollop of sweet chilli sauce. For dinner, we dined at Thanying restaraunt, indulging in some Royal Thai cuisine including dishes such as slices of fresh shallot, lemon, ginger, peanuts, and dried shrimp wrapped in Chinese kale with dried shrimp sauce and a crispy fluffy charcoal grilled catfish salad with slices of green mango! The next day we ate breakfast at a food court on the top floor of one of the shopping malls. All the customers were Thai and nothing was written in english but we found a friendly vegetarian vendor who dished out some incredible dishes that we chose by pointing. The whole thing came to a very reasonable $3 and we loved it so much that we went back there for lunch for the next two days!

The main purpose of our stay in Bangkok was to get our (Burma) Myanmar visas arranged. They have elections coming up so we were a bit worried that they might soon stop tourists from entering the country. We needn't have worried, however, and the whole process was simple and straightforward. 

For our last two nights we treated ourselves to a stay at the ridiculously opulent Millenium Hilton. After travelling for 5 months and staying in some very basic lodgings the decadence of this place is quite something. The interior is like a palace with huge gold spheres dotted about and 50 foot lights dangling down from the ceiling. Alan Titchmarsh would have a field day here with a different water feature in every nook and cranny! The only downside is the cost. The room itself was pretty reasonable but everything else costs a fortune. We spent most of the day time at 'The Beach', the poolside area complete with infinity pool. One night we saved some money by eating at a riverside restaurant a short distance from the hotel called Yok Yor. Specialising in seafood, it was fabulous! On our last night here, we ate in Yuan, the hotel's Chinese restaurant which was also delicious but about three times the price of Yok Yor! Before and after dinner, we went up to Three Sixty, a futuristic cocktail bar resembling a flying saucer, perched on the 31st floor. Here we indulged in such delights as bitter seville orange Margarita and Clover Club which consists of vodka, lemon juice, raspberry puree and egg white. Mmmm mmmmmmm!

This afternoon we fly to Burma where we will be spending the next three weeks. When planning this trip Burma was top of my wishlist of places to go so I'm really excited. I just hope the return to basics is not too much of a shock to the system!
