We have spent the last few days in Santa Fe a small village located in a sparsely inhabited, rugged mountainous area

We are staying in the charming La Qhia hostal run by an Argentine/Belgium couple. The guesthouse has compiled a good deal of information about the local walks and attractions.  On the first day we hiked up to Cerro Sapo (Toad Hill) & Cerro Tute, a hard couple of hours slog uphill, where we were rewarded with spectacular views of the countryside, followed by a steep downhill descent back to the village. Here we found a supermarket with a good stock of decent Chilean wine for the evening’s recovery.

Later in the afternoon we went for a swim in the Rio Mulaba with a Welsh guy called Iolo. The water was deep and fast flowing and very refreshing. We then met a local guy called William who rents out inner tubes to go floating down the river.  He had just finished work but we managed to persuade him to join us so he pumped up some tubes and off we went! It was really, really fun! We had to negotiate some mean rapids and each time we went down a scary part the sound of Catherine screaming could be heard all the way up the river valley! The trip took around an hour with rapids interspersed with slower bits where we laid back and watched the rainforest float by. It was late in the day and the light was fading and we could hear some rumbles of thunder,  all adding to the atmosphere.

The next day we caught a taxi up to La Piedra Alto, a small hamlet at the top of the valley. Here we scrambled down a trail to a lovely waterfall where we enjoyed a cold, invigorating swim.
The following day we visited another waterfall (we love waterfall swimming!) at El Bermejo. This was quite of the beaten track and involved negotiating some seriously muddy trail and some very slippery granite boulders! It was well worth the effort however as the spot was so isolated and the falls magnificent.
