Feeling like I had covered most of Riga's sights while still booked for a couple more nights at the hostel there I decided to take a couple daytrips by train to nearby towns to see some of the other half of Latvia that doesn't live in the capital city. Jurmala is Latvia's biggest beach resort and only a short train ride west of Riga. I bet it's nice in summer, but it was nearly deserted on a frigid, windy day in early April. There were some very nice houses and churches, though, and a lot of reconstruction work going on at old historic hotels.
