Bavaria has been a part of Germany for 140 years but before that had as separate a history from the rest of Germany as Austria, including its own royal family, The Wittelsbachs. The best known Wittelsbach is Ludwig II, known as the "Mad King" because of his crazy private life and wild architectural projects, notably Neuschwanstein, the famous fairy tale castle at the foot of the Alps, and Herrenchiemsee, the Bavarian answer to Louis XIV's extravaganza at Versailles.

Earlier Wittesbach kings had established other royal palaces for themselves long before the Mad King's building spree.  The Residenz, right in the heart of the Bavarian capital Munich, was their main home while Nymphenburg Palace was a country home on the outskirts of the city.  Nymphenburg is now within the Munich metro area and easily reached from downtown by regional S-Bahn trains.
