A second Northern New Mexico site along I-25 that I somehow missed in my previous travels is Fort Union National Monument, a few miles off the highway just north of Las Vegas, NM. And like Pecos, Fort Union is only the remains of what once was, a large military fort that operated from 1851 to 1891 along the Santa Fe Trail that was important in the Indian wars and American conquest of the West. Interestingly, despite its accessibility to the highway, it is according to a ranger I was chatting with the third least visited unit in the National Park System.
