Doug's decision to take a day off from work and go skiing on a Tuesday was entirely because of a deal that was just too good to pass up, that being $10 lift tickets at Belleayre, a New York State run ski area in Catskill State Forest in the Catskill Mountains about 25 miles due west of Kingston.  Yes, I know that sounds too good to be true, and seems like something only a government-subsidized entity could even consider doing.  But when it comes to deals like that on an issue as important as skiing, I'm all for New York State style socialism.
My doubts about this deal and suspicions it might have been one of my brother's optimistic hallucinations proved false.  Yes, we truly did only pay $10 each for our lift tickets, substantially less than the cost of the gas it took us to get there, and I don't care if it's a particularly low-season week sandwiched somewhere between the long holiday weekends of Martin Luther King Day and President's Day and well before mid-winter break; it's still a steal
This was only my second time skiing at Belleayre.  My recollections of it were a bit vague since the first time was twenty years ago.  I was in college and had just started skiing.  I took my brother and one of his friends both high school seniors, for their first day ever on the slopes.  I unleashed a monster.  It didn't take very long before he became one of those ski addicts, the type who skier who goes on a half down ski vacations a year, flies to the Southern Hemisphere to ski in our summer months, and talks about the number of days and the number of "verts" (estimated vertical ski slope feet) he's skied in a season as if it were some kind of a vital competition.  Meanwhile, I've been stuck for years in my skiing skills somewhere between intermediate-intermediate and advanced-intermediate, never learning how to navigate the very steep and the very bumpy slopes all that comfortably.  Maybe after twenty years I should splurge on a lesson or two one of these seasons, you s'pose?
All things considered, Belleayre is quite a nice ski mountain with much pleasant cruising terrain and a pretty well-designed lift system.  Of course, that's easy to say when you're there on a nearly deserted Tuesday, and despite the stellar deal the longest lift line consists of two people.  Snow conditions were surprisingly pleasant as well - not much of the ubiquitous East Coast ice terrain, even though there was occasional drizzle through the day.  We drove back to Doug's both feeling almost as impressed with our deal-finding prowess as we were satisfied with our great day of skiing.  Hey, two days of skiing for $28 dollars total - it doesn't get any better than that!
