Where I stayed
Blue Mountain Resort
The drive from central New Jersey was just over two hours and the weather conditions nearly perfect - brilliant blue skies and temperatures very close to the freezing mark, neither cold enough to be bitter nor warm enough to bring about overheating. It's not necessarily that I like to ski and engage in other outdoor activities by myself. In fact, I'd often prefer to ski or bike or travel with a friend or two, but most of my potential playmates are, of course, sitting in offices most weekdays answering to "The Man"
For example, for the 2007-2008 season at Blue Mountain resort, Monday was "Men's Day", so I figured it was definitely the right day of the week to go especially when conditions were perfect. Despite what it sounds like, though, my goal of going skiing on Men's Day is not to find the date of my dreams (however nice a notion that might be) but to get a discounted lift ticket - $10 off the normal weekday $42 rate. I have to say that I'm all in favor of gender non-discrimination, especially when it means guys have to be offered similar promotions to the discriminatory "Ladies Days" and "Ladies Nights" that have been going on unchallenged for decades.
In the end it didn't matter, though, because instead of paying the discounted lift-ticket rate, a man approached me and offered me a ticket for $18, his at cost rate which he got through work but was not able to use that day because one of his sons got sick and couldn't ski. Hmmm, $18 - that's about what I figure an all day ski lift ticket ought to cost. I made it to my brother's house in Westchester County, NY around 8:00.
