Attempted some cruisey mountainbiking around the lake the morning after the skydive and were too hungover to do it properly. This worked out very nice as we retreated to the van and utterly chilled with books and various recovery/rehydration potions!!
The next morning we left Wanaka and went for a trip in the Matukituki valley and walked up the Rob Roy valley to see a retreating glacier. Highlight was a waterfall that went upwards; very confused. Lowlight was walking through fields of very big cows when a helicopter with lazy American tourists in came by and buzzed the cows making them run around us. Never seen cows run or jump over gulleys before, quite impressive!
LAter we drove the Haast pass over to the West coast and began the recent war against sand flies. I hate them, more than crap itnernet cafes. They can get through mosi netting and the bites go like golf balls. This has caused a couple of stircrazy nights in the van.
A day of rain and 100m visibility followed. Time to watch a movi on the mini DVD palyer!
Today saw us waddle out to have a nosey at the giant Fox glacier, very impressive, and also an early morning stroll around a Mirror lake which was a good insight into some competitive tourism: i.e. people racing around to get to the photopoints first and then getting elbows out to ensure the best spot is kept if the light changes or some such. All going well, I think Jess is starting to fully focus on the wine tasting in the MArlborough region as we are only days away....
