Where I stayed
The hotel room was huge and overlooks a pavebd courtyard, nice enough and another great location. We wandered off in search of the historic zelny trh (cabbage market), Its the most glorious farmers market Ive been to! the Mpls farmers market sitting underneath Interstate 94 just doesnt compare. Its a cobblestone plaza, the center studded by Parnassus Fountain. Carp (the traditional Czech Christmas dinner fare) used to be sold out of the fountain!
Lunch was overlooking the market; a fixed menu of tripe soup, chicken schitznel and apple strudel (ok, i admit it. i upgraded the tripe soup to potato...what can i say?). As usual, the Czech food was delish!
We wandered up (another!?) hill to the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul. Another gorgeous church. but like many were seeing, no pictures allowed inside.
Next: monastic mummies! Yes! How bizarre and cool is that? It was discovered that the crypt at the monastery was the perfect environment for preserving mummies! there are monks, notables, etc on display. CREEPY. never seen mummies that up close- could see fingernails and ears on many still. So bizarre. Also bizarre was the description of the reusable drop bottom casket that was used at the monastery for the monks.
From there we wondered down the broad boulevards and Mazarykara Road, taking a look at historic buildings and stopping in a few churches. In addition to the baroque pulpit and circa 1500 frecos, The Church of St James had an extra something special. Above one window is a stone figure known as 'The Shameless' mooning. Yes. mooning. Legend is that it was courtesy a disgruntled mason. Definitely unique and i dont understand why they left it at the time.
There were a couple big ticket items we were sad to miss in Brno
We did recover though as thankfully breweries arent closed on Mondays! :) We went to Starobrno brewery where we sat on a terrace Michael enjoying Starobrno beer and me enjoying 'radlers' (lemonade and beer mix). We chatted w/ a retired czech engineer sitting next to us- an enjoyable evening! the gyros from a closet-sized restaurant on the way home were enjoyable too!
