New Years in Mumbai! We thought we'd find a crazy party and bring in the New Year in style. Little did we know we'd sleep right through it!
We started off well and found a deluxe hotel and set off to meet our friend Eli (met him in Diu) at Leopolds... a bar/restaurant made famous from the book Shataram. Eli and I just finished reading it. He brought along another new friend,Shav, a D.J. living in Singapore. We headed off for the day to see Mumbai's sights via 'The Lonely Planet' walk...met several other groups of tourists walking around holding up the Lonely Planet also doing the circuit. Later on Eli convinced us to see Avatar in 3D! It was absolutely wonderful...thanks Eli.
Getting ready for New Years I decided to get my grey hairs touched up and scouted around for a hair place, found one and made an appointment. Heading in I thought I was getting my roots touched up...three hours later I walked out with a complete make over and alot less money. Bleach blond, shoulder length styled to the side...I went into a bit of shock...I guess I should have just been happy that I still had hair on my head.
It was hard walking by and seeing all the pavement dwellers, people who sleep on the side walk. We never did go to visit slum areas but we drove by blocks and blocks of little shanty towns pulled together with sheets of bamboo, tarp, plastic. whatever they could get thir hands on. It's hard to imagine.
Big city, Big city prices. We were use to paying between $5 & $15 and the only hotel with a room available that night was the Residency, and the room was worth $60! But what a room! Beautiful decor with luxurious bed, A.C., and a huge bathroom with a powerful hot shower. A similar room in Vancouver would have been triple the price. We wanted to keep the and spoil ourselves for stay in Mumbai, but being so close to New Year's so all the rooms were booked so we were transfered to a sister hotel at about a 3rd of the price. The room was big and good value. The only problem was a street excavation going on in front of the hotel. Didn't think much about until that first night when the hand excavating stopped and the machine excavating began. It took me a while to get to sleep. Then between 5 & 6 am somedody starts hammering on rebar tink, tink, tink..
