While staying in Gythio, we had a day trip to Monemvasia, the big rock. It is considered the most romantic place in Greece. This may be for several reasons. One, Helen of Troy ran away with her lover Paris here. Of course, her husband believed she was abducted. Another reason may be because it has no automobiles, the beaches are beautiful and the little village that has redeveloped is interesting and romantic. I of course, had to climb to the top of the rock. It started out with uneven steps, advanced into rocks, always upward. There was a church about halfway up and yes, you guessed it, another Sophia. Only seven of us made it to the top and it was breathtaking up there. We had lunch which I really enjoyed. It was cabbage rolls with a lemon sauce and of course, a greek salad.
I was also lucky here to find a shop with olive wood items.
