Last week we traveled to Cervantes for three reasons: celebrating Christmas in the middle of nowhere, to see the Pinnacles Desert and to snorkel with Sea Lions. After a very long drive through the deserts of Western Australia we reached Cervantes, a small and isolated village along a  beautiful coast. After enjoying two fantastic sunsets in the Pinnacles Desert – surrounded by mysterious rock formations, kangaroos and sand – we considered ourselves very lucky. According to local tour guides the sunsets were some of the best they had ever seen. We have included some pictures below, although they do not portray the full beauty of the evening. After spending Christmas on the pristine white, windy beaches of Cervantes, we traveled north to Jurien Bay. This bay is famous for its snorkeling trips with Sea Lions – the sort of excursion we enjoy. While Josephine enjoyed the sea breeze, we prepared for our encounter with the Sea Lions. After a plunge into the warm water we were soon confronted by two female lions. The dove with us, showing off under water, playing with each other and blowing bubbles beneath us.  It was a unique experience.

On Boxing Day we drove south to Fremantle, where we have rented a cottage next to the infamous prison. The Fremantle Prison was home to thousands of British inmates from the 1850s. Fremantle is a typical Victorian town and has the first ‘older’ buildings we have seen since our departure from Amsterdam. We enjoy strolling along the harbor and coastline, exploring the town in the tropical heat. Yesterday the temperature came close to 40 degrees centigrade. We decided to visit Perth Zoo in the tropical heat and experienced the Down Under tour along eerie Salt Water Crocodiles, cool penguins, sinister poisonous snakes, enthusiastic wallabees, lazy kangaroos, and sluggish koala bears. We like Fremantle and enjoy the delicious coffee and cakes which are served on every street corner. Also, it was nice to see an old classmate and his girlfriend – Job & Yvette – who came over for dinner. They confirmed our observations: Western Australia is great!
