Chapter Sixteen - Wimbledon & Winchester
Trip Start Sep 28, 2012
20Trip End Oct 14, 2012
It's today that Michael, our nephew, arrives with Charlotte, his wife, Elle, their daughter and Melissa, a friend who has tagged along. They have rented a house from AIRBNB in Sanderstead, about fifteen minutes from Epsom, and a van to carry all the baby equipment. After breakfast with Byron and Sheila, we drive over to meet them. They have just arrived.
We go over our programme for the day, which includes a visit to the Wimbledon Tennis Centre. When I mention that I used to live near Wimbledon, Michael expresses his disappointment that he missed seeing any of my past residences. Somewhat reluctantly I agree to retrace yesterday’s journey. Hopefully the weather is better today.
We have reserved our tour of the tennis centre in advance and have to be there by 1:30 pm on the dot, which we manage to do, Michael following us in his van
The visit is fascinating as the photos show. Our tour guide was exceptional, and now we will watch the Wimbledon championships with new insight.
We slip by Southfields on our way back to Droxford and Alresford and after our visits we continue to Winchester for a brief stopover. By now it’s getting dark, so some skip the sightseeing and enter a local tavern to enjoy a pub dinner. Cecilia, Melissa and I decide to see Winchester even in the twilight, and are rewarded by an incredible lighting show in the Cathedral. After dinner we wend our way back to our separate residences.
