All checked in and ready to go, we periodically glance at the departures board. To our consternation it changes before our very eyes to "delayed – 7:10 pm".

“Darn! We'd better phone Karen and Ed to warn them not to go to the airport yet.”

The advantages of mobile phones! In the past we would have just hoped that they’d be checking the flight arrivals from their end. Not so today, as we can keep them completely abreast of our every move immediately.

A cool beer calms us down until we hear another announcement.

“Passengers of Southwest flights to New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Providence, please approach the counter.”

“There's been very heavy storms in the north east and several airports have been closed. That’s caused a lot of air traffic congestion along our routes so the DOT has asked us to delay all our flights passing through the northeast corridor. We’ve confirmed you for tomorrow on a flight through Baltimore, arriving in Providence at 12:20 pm.”

What a let-down! We have actually lost almost a day of our brief holiday, and there’s no compensation from Southwest as it’s a weather problem quite out of their control.

We phone back Ed to tell him the bad news. We won't be sleeping at Talley's Corner tonight, but in our own beds, much to the happiness of our dog and cats.
