Yes! Up at 4:00 am. Our flight leaves Marco Polo Airport at 7:15 am . We have found that the first vaporetto to the airport leaves St. Mark's at 5 am . By 4:30 am we are checking out, and off we roll, wheeling our bags behind us, in the dark, silent alleys of Venice .

But they aren't so silent as we expected. A bevy of workmen pass us going towards Rialto , cleaning women chatter as they go to work at the hotels, and other tourists and travellers join us as we approach the pier. We find that in fact there are around 5 flights leaving Venice between 7 and 7:30 am , so we are by no means alone as we finally set sail for the airport.

On the way we stop at Lido and Murano to pick up more passengers, finally arriving at 6:00 am on the dot, and its an easy check-in for our flight to Frankfurt and on to Miami .
