Hey!
So sorry that you've all been waiting for my next post.. I know the
anticipation has been killing you. To say that I have been busy would
be an understatement. I have made some really great friends here, all
of whom are really fun.
It's been a hot week here in Buenos Aires.. I'm really feeling for all of you back home in 4 degree weather. Hope you stay bundled up!
I'm all settled into the dorm and my Spanish classes are going well. The classes are a bit too easy, but a good review nonetheless. When I'm not in class, I'm really enjoying being in the city, surrounded by people and activity all the time. I haven't been bored for a minute, except when I'm doing that homework thing.. I haven't gotten used to the idea of having to work yet. Last Monday we went to an outdoor concert of La Bomba de los Minutos which is this really cool drumming group.. and we went this Monday, too. And when I say "we" I mean my friends from la residencia (or "the res").
I wrote last week about starting my volunteer work on Tuesday.. and it's going really well. It's not exactly what I expected - I thought there would be a lot more to do for the kids, besides play games, color, do homework, etc., but it is still very rewarding. The kids are great - it depends on which neighborhood you visit each day but they're all kinds of fun and it's easy to tell that they really love having L.I.F.E. to their community and just hang out. I posted some pictures of the kids.
They do a lot of roommate juggling here so right now I'm all by myself in a triple.. needless to say my stuff is everywhere. I feel sorry for my next roommate!
Last week we had an evening in where we learned how to make empanadas from Magdelena, a girl who lives in the dorms and is native to Argentina. For those of you who have never eaten an empanada, I'll make some for you when I get home. Besides empanadas, the food here has been wonderful.. good thing the dorm comes with a gym membership!
Last night (Wednesday, 1/21) I went with some girls to see "Eva: The Musical" about Evita Peron. It was good but I didn't catch much of the Spanish while they were singing.. oh well, still enjoyable. The actress playing Evita was about 75. It was weird.. because Evita died when she was young so seeing a 75-year-old in low cut dresses and doing leaps across the stage was rather impressive, though a little disturbing.
I'm still getting adjusted to the heat, but I bought a fan so I should be stellar.
I posted some photos.. enjoy! Sorry about some of the titles, it got a little tedious to caption every single photo so I gave up, but if you have any questions about what something is, just ask!
Love to all.
