Today was our first day in the orphanage. We spent time in the baby and toddler unit, it was exactly how I expected but even though I thought I would be prepared for what I saw, it was a totally different experience actually being there. There are so many babies and toddlers and not enough staff to care for their immediate needs, I won't go into any more details, but it was very harrowing. On top of this there is an outbreak of chickenpox at the orphanage too.

We then took a trip to a unit off of the same service where young boys are kept on remand until trial. They range in age from 14 - 19. They didn't speak great English because they are taken out of school completely due to the nature of their crimes, but we let them listen to music from our iPods and played a few games of volleyball with them. It was really great seeing them interact positively with us because when we first went in, all but one boy seemed very reserved and reluctant to engage - a totally different reaction than we have been used to in Sri Lanka. There were only five boys at the unit, who are not allowed outside. They have no contact with parents, and there are lots of security measures in place to keep them inside. It's very sad to think that the rest of their life is determined by the choices they made as little boys, even if they were bad choices.

Tomorrow we are going to bring in some sippy cups we bought at a supermarket today for the kids and some baby wipes, nappies, toys and books.

It's been a long hard day, but we are all still really grateful for the chance to do what we are doing in Sri Lanka and even if it's just a little, we are helping :-)

Ps we saw a massive snake today! And some monkeys yesterday, why is Scotland not this cool?
