We arrived late into LAX, so we just crashed out in a cheap and cheerful motel in LA. Having had 4 months in nice hot sunny countries, we found LA a smidge on the chilly side especially as we were still dressed for Hawaii.  The next day was spectacularly uneventful with a 500 mile drive north.  The only significant moment of interest was passing a mega cattle farm in Kettlemen City called Tejon Ranch.  This ranch is as large as Los Angeles and holds over 12000 cattle, and boy did it stink out about 5 miles of Highway 5.

With miles of nothing to see, we blasted up to Sacramento, then hung a right for Lake Tahoe. We stopped at the historic town of Placerville, an old hanging town from the gold rush days, just as we entered the El Dorado National Park and went in search of cheap ski kit.  Though M has sworn he would never make a purchase from a thrift (charity) shop, he swallowed his pride when he found 2 pairs of 4 clip ski boots, in our sizes, and in near perfect condition for 10.  K got herself kitted out in a duck down ski jacket and some go faster salopettes before we headed up to Tahoe to hire skis.
