Today is M's 50th Birthday. There has been a longstanding joke when K kept asking what we were going to do 'special’, to mark the occasion, as if Fiji wasn’t enough. So the day was split in two, a morning snorkel on the house reef, and fishing in the afternoon. Manta Ray Bay is awesomely beautiful, crystal clear turquoise water that easily match the Maldives. We have religiously carried our snorkels for over 27000 miles, and today they can get their second dusting off. A leisurely swim over the colourful coral and shoals of bright coloured fish was quite magical. In our view, the coral reef 20 metres of the beach of Mantaray Bay, accessible free of charge, was more colourful, had more fish and was far far nicer then the Great Barrier Reef that cost us 200.

M, always wanting to push the boundaries, slipped under the rope of the house reef into deeper water and was greeted by Bob the resident 5 foot reef shark. Another over reaction from K meant she may well have been close to breaking the world record for front crawl on her way back to the beach.

The afternoon birthday present was ‘Game Fishing in Fiji’. We chartered a boat with 4 others for a 3 hour game fishing trip. With plenty of beer on board, a few rods with huge lures we headed to some offshore reefs.  Trawling the reef area at high tide was great fun, sadly the rods were not allocated to individuals and it was a team fish so as each rod went off in a high speed spin, we all cheered, and took it in turns to pull a catch in. There was a smidge of bottom lip that M did not pull in the big Spanish mackerel, but it was still a fantastic day topped by K picking up the bill.
