Lionman, staring Craig Busch, has long been one of our favourite animal programmes and having watched these programmes over years, it just had to be on our list of 'must see' when in NZ.

We were fortunate enough to be in the area on feeding day, so promptly booked our trip. Zion Wildlife Park has been under a cloud in recent years, but it is rebuilding itself into a brilliant day out.

The tour to feed each of the 33 cats, takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Luckily, we had K on the trip who deliberately asked as many questions as she could and extended the tour to over two hours.

We were taken to each cat, told its history, and then it was given a large slice of locally donated cow. As we walked round you could feel the tensions rising, each cat decided that it was going to raise its roar louder than the one before. We were always safe, however, being protected by only thin wire mesh fencing and animals all wanting feeding at the same time, gave us a fantastic appreciation of the power of these wonderful animals. Many of them went mad for food, attacking the gates and food troughs. We had never been so close to these beasts, and trust me, they are no pussycats.

It was great to recognise some of the cats from the show, with the highlight being Gandor, the white male who was walked down the beach, and Zion, the first cat, and the one featured in the film Narnia.
