After leaving Rotorura we made our way up to Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel peninsula and found a freedom camping ground at Cathedral Cove. The main town on the peninsula is Coromandel which is named after a British supply ship in 1820. It is the focal point of the rugged rural peninsula which has great sandy beaches and a fantastic coast road. With all the beauty of South Island, we stayed on the penisula for a second night after a short drive north to Fantail Bay.
As always with freedom or DOC camping, everyone is magnificently friendly and our new neighbours for the night were a cracking Kiwi family who had converted a huge lorry into a campervan – they really did have everything including the kitchen sink
We could have stayed in Fantail Bay for a week, but sadly we headed back south and up to Auckland. We did make a decision while driving (again) that our planned route was too ambitious given our available time, so we decided not to head to the very top of 90 mile beach and have extra chill time in the Bay of Islands.
In Whangarei we saw the most ridiculous self-service, coin operated 'Dog Wash‘N Dry' which had us in stiches. This timid dog would have sat in any kitchen sink, but the proud owner wanted to pay the $6 to give him a treat.
