J&S live in Manly which is situated seven miles north-east of Sydney on the lower Northern Beaches. Manly was named by Captain Arthur Phillip after his encounter with the confident and manly Aboriginal people of the Kay-ye-my clan who lived here and it is widely regarded as Sydney's premier beach resort.
In the afternoon we caught the Manly ferry over to the city and did a flying tour of the Rocks, Botanic Gardens and Opera House area. It was interesting to watch the pyrotechnics guys forklifting the fireworks into place as we walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge
Due to the children factor, Manly has superb firework display at 9pm as well as midnight. We watched the 9pm which then gave us time to walk 4KM up to a vantage point previously recce’d. We sat in on a headland looking down to the firework barges and Harbour Bridge to witness our first Oz New Year - it was pretty spectacular and a big tick in the box. The firework display was brilliant and outrageously trumped the jog back to Manly beach to re-join the party.
All in all it was a very different (huge beach parties) New Year than we had previously experienced made extra special by the wonderful hospitality of James, Sarah and their friends who kindly invited us to their plush beach front pad NYE party.
