It is quite bizarre given that we have not travelled that far south of Cap Tribulation where it rained daily, that it has not rained here for over a month – we saw lots of bush fires on the way down.
Sadly, to meet our objective of New Year in Sydney, we had to leave Cairns and head south. To break up the journey we nipped into Townsville for a night, then onto backpacker's paradise, Airlie Beach. Airlie Beach is lovely and more importantly the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. We found a campsite in the bush half the price of those in the town, so we are in the wild for a few days. We have acquired new friends in this campsite, M went running and with the Kangaroos, while K went to the shower with voyeur frogs and toads. We have frequent visits from a huge turkey that clearly does not have any fear of it being Xmas in a weeks’ time. It is impossible to sleep past 6 am as the cockatoos chime their morning chorus which seems to trigger all the other animals.
