Where I stayed
We made our way into Laerdal which was having its Saturday market, complete with everything from Rider Mowers, Salami, Tea Cups, Candy and trucker hats. They had a small stage and we relaxed and watched some of the bands play until our Ferry was to depart.
After asking around it seemed that this Ferry ride, to Gundvangen through the Naeroyfjorden (named after the fact that it is the most narrow fjord in Norway), was the most breathtaking. Again, the pictures do not due the natural beauty justice...the small villages, waterfalls and snow-capped peaks seemed to appear one after the other
On the boat we met a nice woman named Eli (Elle) and her foreign exchange student named Lucas (from Brazil no less). We chatted with them for most of the ferry ride as she shared with us many ideas on a few of the things we can do over the next few days. She even offered to have us to her farm in Voss so we are hoping to meet up on our way to Bergen tomorrow.
After we landed in the valley village of Gundvangen, we followed Elle to the famous Stalheim Hotel that overlooks the entire Naeroyfjorden. We checked out the fantastic views and the WWII Nazi Bunker. She also sent us down a small dirt road to the village of Brekke where she thought we might be able to camp for free. After entering the private road (20 Nkr) we round ourselves surrounded first by cows, then sheep. So we decided to head back towards town and camp at one of the sites just off the E16.
For dinner we headed to the Gundvangen Fjordtell which Eli recommended as they were having a BBQ and band. We enjoyed the good eats for once and relaxed while listening to music of James Taylor and others. It sort of felt like sitting at a bar at home, except when you looked up through the glass roof you were surrounded by mountain peaks and waterfalls...
We are now back at camp. As we look out our tent door we have a beautiful view of the Kjelfossen Waterfall. I don't know if we'll wake up to anything like this for a long time!
Catch ya on the flip side,
