Where I stayed
Miss Ashley elected to rest for the afternoon so I headed out to walk the streets of Gothenburg (pronounced Yur-te-boy, yeah I don't get it either?). So checking the weather these past few weeks I was hoping for some miraculous change from 50 and rain, but sadly...no go. It was raining solidly ALL day. It honestly felt like a crappy fall day. It sort of made it hard to get a grasp of the city...
Small canals and tree-lined streets typify Gothenburg and while walking around I felt a little like I was in St
Gothenburg is organized into many major tree lined boulevard. The largest, "The Avenyn" is lined with numerous 19th and early 20th century buildings, shopping and cafes. At the end of the street is the Gotaplasten Square housing a few theatres and Carl Milles masterpiece Poseidon sculpture. Interesting story on this one (and thus the title of this entry) Apparently when Poseidon was sculpted, Milles made his genetalia so large that the citizens of conservative Gothenburg were so outraged that they made him make it "less life sized". You can judge in the pictures yourself on this one...
I continued walking around the city making my way past the University and into Hama, the old town. Described as a Swedish version of Greenwich Village, Hama is lined with café's, eclectic shops and cobblestone streets and I dreamed of brighter days when I would have been able to take more advantage.
The rain began to pound down harder so I quickly made my way down one of the canals to the Gustav Adolf Torg statue (the founder of Gothenburg) and the Radhaus (city hall/court house). These things were all written up highly in the guidebooks but the rain really put a damper on things so I just decided to head back.
Ashley and I headed out to dinner a little bit later...we walked back over toward the Hama district and after wandering around found a quant little Italian place called Toscana, had some proschutto and mushroom pizza and relaxed.
It's about 10:30 at the moment...Ashley is already passed out and I'm about to do the same. Note to self - never take three flights again in one day again.
Tomorrow we head to the Volvo HQ and the real journey begins!
