Today we had our first day of classes at the University of Alexandria. A few of us started the day off with a 3 mile run along the beautiful Corniche, to the old Citadel. My room-mate (Lange) and I had to grab breakfast on the run at the local "Gad" restaurant. We ordered "Omelets," which turned out to be a pita filled with a boiled egg and potato chips. Breakfast in hand, we boarded the ancient streetcar tram and rode to the University, and started classes at 9:00.

We have two professors; one teaches from 9:00 - 11:00, the other from 11:30 - 1:30. We returned to the hotel, where a group of us worked on our homework for another four hours. After finishing my work, I took my laundry bag (which is now a substantial amount) to a local laundromat, and bought some Egyptian music - I took the shop-owner's recommendations, and ended up with Amr Diab, Elissa, and Tamer Hosni cds.

Yesterday, we went to the Carrefour to buy groceries. On the way back, our taxi (a soviet-era Lada) broke down on the highway, and our driver proceeded to fix it himself on the side of the road with some spare wire, and a screw-driver. It was hot, but we enjoyed the show! (See the video)

Tonight we are going to the Carlos Cafe for dinner, and to watch the World Cup.

Michael -- what a great way to stay in touch. I know it takes time to post this info, but it's so fun to be able to follow what you're doing. Also, it will be a nice journal for you to have some day. Keep the updates coming and have a blast! Yes -- I am most definitely jealous already! xxo

I love this! Right now the only international travel I'm experiencing is watching nature shows and "The Bachelorette" on TV! I'm both jealous and orgulloso of you (yes, I can read un poquito de espanol!).

Hola, nieto de Alexandria! My turn to say how much fun it is to have your blog, so we can follow your adventures and learn something about Edypt, since it seems so alien from here, but won't after we read your blogs. We laughed and laughed at the picture of you on that highly decorated camel, with your local hat! Have fun, study hard, and eat well and be careful always!!! We love you, G and G

Hi Michael! First time ever on a blog! What a great experience you are having! Love the pictures. Sounds like your days are pretty full. Will you get to do any flying over there? Am just out of school myself which means summer can start. Yeah! Busy with wedding plans. Will sure miss you, but what an opportunity for you. All say hi from Oregon! Love you, Aunt Sheila
