Flag of Turkey  , Turkish Aegean Coast,
Tuesday, June 26, 2012

We had a long travelling day today, making our way down the Aegean Coast towards Izmir. First stop was at Troy, where there is a full size model of the Trojan Horse (almost certainly a mythological story), and extensive ruins in several layers dating back some 4500 years. Apparently the first person to dig here was so keen to find the treasury, he made a real mess of things! There are many stone walls that have been excavated, although it's can be hard to tell what is original and what is a recreation of the original. In any case, an interesting experience.

We drove past Troas and Asos, both sites mentioned in the bible but where there isn't much to see now, and ended up at Pergamon. This is a site with extensive ruins on a high plateau overlooking the modern town of Bergama. In Revelation, Pergamon is spoken of as the place "where Satan has his throne." It's easy to see what John meant in a sense, as the hilltop is where there was an alter to Zeus and a pagan temple. The Christians living in the shadow of this place where so many gods were worshipped would have suffered much persecution for their beliefs. The site itself is another incredible place, however again it is hard to tell what is original and what is a recreation. In any case, even the parts that have been restored are made from the original materials (marble mostly) that have been pieced back together. A bit like a giant jigsaw puzzle! To get to the top of the hill from the city of Bergama, there is an elevator and then a cable car system. This is fairly new - the last tour group from Ridley had to walk up!

Our last stop of the day before going to our Hotel was at Smyrna, which is located within the large modern city of Izmir. There is a small excavation site surrounded by multi-level car parks and apartment buildings! Unfortunately, the site had closed early today so we had to make do with seeing what we could through the barred fence. Apparently there isn't a lot to see here anyway, so we didn't miss much.

Time to go - another early start tomorrow and it's already 10:15pm.
