The Patchwork Adventure....by Fiona
Well, I wasn't really planning to go Patchwork shopping on our holiday, but it was Day 4, we had done all of our 'must do's' and we had a few hours to kill. We tried the Galeries Lafayette first. It's a very large department store, and I thought they might have a 'fabric department'. Level 6 had a small craft/habedashery section, alas we found only 5 or 6 bundles of fat quarters in one display cabinet. Some were batiks and some were bright plaids. I asked the sales assistant if she spoke English - no, she didn't...but the second one I tried did. She told me the 'Le Bon Marche' had some patchwork fabric, and she told us the Metro station which was close by.
We were quite comfortable with how the Met worked by now, so we took 2 lines to get to the location. Le Bon Marche turned out to be another department store, even more up-market than the Galeries. I was thinking this fabric could be very expensive !! We found the right floor, and I was very excited to find a small range of fabrics. About 20 to 30 Liberty prints, quite a few Kaffe Fasset prints, and another 20 or 30 local (I think) fabrics. Some were Japanese-ey in style and some were traditional French style prints. I managed to pick 3 of the traditional fabrics I liked, while Mark paced around getting bored. See Mark's blog for full description of our long wait. While we were waiting for our turn to be served, I spotted a magazine rack with some Quilting magazines. They were 9 euros (about 15 dollars) but were chock full of gorgeous French style quilt designs. They are quite simple, only one or two fabrics, with a lot of quilting around the borders. The fabrics were 18 to 22 euros (30 to 36 dollars) per metre.
It took Mark an hour or two to calm down, once we had left the shop ! But I can't wait to get home and start on a traditional style French quilt. I probably should finish 2 or 3 of my other projects first, though.
