A few notes on food and shopping - from Fiona
Entry 6 of 22 | show all | print this entry |
Bonjour tout le monde,
Yama has requested some notes of food. We have been walking everywhere, and have noticed that almost every street block has a small boulangerie/patisserie (bakery/cake shop) with a wonderful range of pastries, brioche, baguettes, homemade quiches, and assorted tarts (citron, fraisse, marron). Also, chocolatier shops are very common. I have no idea how French women stay so skinny! Creperies are also very common, and gelateries. The gourmet food section at Galeries Lafayette was sublime, similar to David Jones, but about 10 times more variety.
Our picnic selection consisted of Brie, Proscuitto, a marinated olive and fetta salad, a rocket, cherry tomato and bocconini salad, and a divine loaf of bread, similar to an Italian ciabatta, covered in roasted pumpkin seeds. Small bottle of Bordeaux red as accompaniment (with Pepsi for Mark). Lunches have been Baguettes, filled with ham off the bone, slices of egg, tomato and lettuce, Pizza with Cheese, Tomato, Anchovies and olives, Penne with a vegetable sauce, and Fromage Frais with a Rasberry coulis. We bought some yogurt, with blackberries, from a take-away for breakfast this morning, it was Yoplait, but we were quite surprised to find the tub was a brown, ceramic pottery tub, not the plastic we are used to.
We visited the Galeries Lafayette, on Saturday afternoon. It seemed that half of Paris was there as well. Wall to wall people. This store (Paris' equivalent of Myer or David Jones) had a number of 'Moet-Chandon' bars, a small counter where you could order a glass of Moet, in a very tall tulip shaped glass, and sit and drink it, with a small plate of rice crackers as accompaniment. Very civilised!!
Most restaurants have their menu on display outside, and most of these seem very traditional. Snails, French onion soup, Fish with Herbs and butter, Creme caramel, Chocolate mousse, Profiteroles, Fromage Frais etc. For dinner tonight, we had a 'set menu'. This is a fixed price menu for 2 or 3 courses. I had Fish Soup, Duck breast with Black Pepper sauce, and Chocolate icecream with whipped Cream. Mark ordered Country Ham, Rump steak, with Pepper sauce, and Profiteroles. There was no salad or vegies with the main courses, just half a plate of chips!
